Well all, I’ve been sorting through some scholarly journal databases and I’ve found several somewhat-relevant articles. There really isn’t anything on geographic, or geospatial representations of news. I’m not too surprised by this. The thing to remember about articles in scholarly journals is that they take several months (or even years) to research, write and pass through the peer review process before publishing. Therefore, the content can be trusted, but it often older than information you might find, say, in a newspaper.
I searched several databases for “citizen journalism” articles and found a few. I also widened the search to include some non-peer-reviewed periodicals, and the articles there were much more current. Many of these detailed average citizens using their cell phones to share information with others. This resparked my interest in the citizen journalism cell phone and web app and makes me think we should reconsider the idea. That said, CNN’s I-report seems to already be doing what I had envisioned.
